Carole Hildebrandt, MA, NTP
I’ve struggled with undiagnosed digestive disorders all my life. Since I was active outdoors most of my childhood, my weight problems didn’t really start until I put on my “Freshman 30” when I began college . . . and I’ve yo-yoed up and down ever since. Many of my food choices – due to budget constraints or the latest popular diet or to reward/console myself emotionally – have not honored my body or my spirit. I’ve tried many of the popular diets (a life-timer at Weight Watchers, the Blood-Type diet, Atkins, South Beach, the cabbage soup and grapefruit diets, vegetarian and vegan) all with temporary success. Though faithfully following the recommended guidelines of low-fat, high fiber and whole grains, I struggled to control my weight, to motivate my GI system, and to reduce my overall fatigue.
When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, one of my first questions was “What could I have done to prevent this from happening in my body?” Being science-minded, I have always known that our body has an innate intelligence, that it is a miraculous instrument designed to heal itself. While researching to discover how I could change my habits and lifestyle to become cancer free, one thing kept shouting out – YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT!
After many years as a classroom teacher, my research and experiences convinced me it was time to leave teaching to pursue a nutrition education program that would support a natural, whole-foods approach to health and wellness. Combining my love of food, cooking, teaching, and a desire to help others stay well, I became a certified Nutritional Therapy Practitioner (NTP) and founded Wise Habits Nutritional Therapy.
My mission is to support clients along their voyage to improved health and vibrancy through simple diet and lifestyle changes. Through our work together, I empower clients to:
- Sort through the jumble of conflicting and misleading dietary information
- Learn the importance of a traditional, properly prepared whole-foods diet
- Avoid common toxins in our daily life
- Connect to local, sustainable food sources and other community resources
Working one-on-one with clients, I assess current health, nutrition, weight and energy levels. Through this evaluation process, we begin to “peel back the layers of the onion,” looking beyond alleviating your symptoms and working to find the root cause of your health issues. Together we will work to design diet changes for proper nutritional support and develop everyday life-alterations tailored to your individual health and lifestyle needs.
You’ll learn to listen to the wisdom of your body, decipher food labels to maneuver yourself toward the healthiest foods in the grocery store and choose healthy personal care products while continuing to explore how best to reach your goals for optimal health.
Individual nutrition coaching is available locally in the Portland, Oregon metropolitan area as well as via phone or Skype to serve clients elsewhere around the world. Specializing in GAPS and SCD diets, Gluten-Free and Grain-Free eating and Paleo nutrition, I helps clients connect to real, whole-food nutrition for better living. In-home cooking and meal planning sessions, pantry clean-outs, and healthy grocery store tours are also available upon request. I am also available to provide nutrition seminars and wellness workshops to business, school and community groups.
